Day 1: Dakar / Kaolack / Toubacouta

Enjoy breakfast in hotel in Dakar before departing for the ocean and river port town of Kaolack.

On the way, pass the old colonial town of Rufisque, and hometown of the internationally famous singer/songwriter Ismael Lo.  Stop for a quick snack in Diam Nadio as you purchase delicious mangoes from one of the many colorful saleswomen.

Visit Sindia forest for breathtaking views of Senegal's national tree - the baobab. Arrive in the coastal town of Mbour where you will greet the fishermen as they return with the day's catch on their hand painted pirogues. Take a peak at their fish drying sheds.

Dine on a typical Senegalese lunch in one of Kaolack’s fine restaurants. Then browse with the locals through its markets – Here you will find everything from medicinal herbs, handicrafts, African wax print fabric, vegetables, and talismans. Continue on your travels, stopping by Mandinka villages along the way. Meet the residents and visit their homes.

In the late afternoon arrive in the isolated yet culturally rich and ethnically diverse town of Toubacouta where the rivers of Sine and Saloum meet. Do not be surprised to spot some monkeys before checking into your hotel.

If you like, enjoy a refreshing glass of bissap juice while gazing at the diverse flora and fauna. Or get a closer look at the mangroves by taking a short stroll to the banks of the Sine Saloum River. Then, savor dinner and a restful night at the hotel.

Day 2: Toubacouta / Bossinka / Toubacouta

Dine on breakfast at the hotel before departing by pirogue for a tranquil boat ride on the Saloum River. The trip is a birdwatchers paradise as you are sure to spot pelicans, herons, egrets, flamingos and other migratory birds along the mangroves.

Your destination is the village of Bossinka, Here you will find a delightful sandy beach perfect for swimming, relaxing and enjoying a picnic.

After lunch, visit the fishing port and the large sacred Kapock tree where the villagers worship and take their sacrifices.

Return by boat for more bird watching.

Unwind; take a dip in the pool before dinner and your overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 3: Toubacouta / Joal / Fadiouth / Dakar

Enjoy Breakfast at the hotel.

Depart for Joal, a town of 5,000 along the Sine River and birthplace of Senegal’s first president - Leopold Sedar Senghor. Upon arrival, take in the 19th Century colonial architecture and meet the predominantly Serer/Christian population. 

You will cross a wood bridge and enter the neighboring town of Fadiouth. Here you meet the elders and notables of the village. Watch women as they pound wheat with large pestles. Observe the granaries on piles. And discover a Christian cemetery built out of shells.

Depart for the international seaside resort town of Saly on the Petite Cote where you will dine for lunch.

Relax on the long sandy beach with its calm clear waters and listen to the sounds of the ocean beckon you. Rent a beach umbrella and purchase some refreshments or forgo the umbrella and work on your tan. Not in the mood for the beach? Then browse some of Saly’s many boutiques.

Lastly, return to Dakar for the evening.
