Day 1:

Welcome to Senegal.

Day 2:


After breakfast we take a morning ferry to Goree Island - the outpost of the Atlantic slave trade and UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a curator guided tour of the slave house. Many guests choose to make a special prayer inside the house. Enjoy lunch on the island. Visit a sand painting artist in his workshop and watch him create his work. Visit the artisanal market and the take in the panoramic view of Goree. Return to Dakar for dinner and night in the hotel.

Day 3:

Enjoy breakfast before departing to the phosphorus Pink Lake. On the way, visit the traditional market of Thiaroye. Observe the phenomenon of the pink hue of the lake as the sun shines upon it. Enjoy the surrounding sand dunes, traditional village, and ocean via a French World War II era 4x4 jeep. Stop and observe the locals engaged in salt mining. Then continue on to the beach resort town of Saly for lunch and a little sun bathing. Here you will spend the night at a seaside hotel.

Day 4:


After breakfast, visit the reserve of Bandia where you can see crocodile, giraffe and monkey among other animals. Lunch will be in Kaolack before departing for Toubacouta along the Sine Saloum River. Once you have settled in, take a pirogue (traditional fishing boat) ride along the Sine Saloum River to observe migratory birds in their natural habitat. After dinner, enjoy your own special djembe drum performance. Feel free to dance. Spend the night in the hotel in Toubacouta.

Day 5:


Dine on breakfast in the hotel. Depart for Juffurey Gambia (the ancestral home of Roots author Alex Haley). Visas are required for entrance to Gambia. They may be obtained at the border crossing. While in Juffurey meet Alex Haley's relatives and visit the village museum reporting the history of slavery in the region. Have lunch in Juffurey. Ferry over to Banjul. Enjoy dinner and a night's rest in Serekunda.

Day 6:

Visit the village artisanal market and pick up some souvenirs in Serekunda. Make a sightseeing tour of the city of Banjul. Have lunch. Enjoy a free afternoon where you may relax on the beach or by the swimming pool. Have dinner and spend the night in the hotel.

Day 7:

Morning flight to Accra, Ghana.

Akwaaba (Welcome).

Arrive in the international airport of Kotoka in Accra. Your bus will take you to your hotel for check in and lunch. Visit Kwame Nkruma Memorial Park, the Independence Square, and the national museum. Enjoy dinner and spend the night in the hotel.

Day 8:


Have breakfast in the hotel. Browse and pick up some souvenirs at the Accra mall. Then head out to the more traditional market at Osu Oxford Street. Enjoy lunch and sunbathing on Accra's most popular beach -Lobadi. Then take in the sights and sounds of the locals. Music, drumming, dancing and barbecuing are frequent beach activities. Horse back riding on the beach can be arranged. Return to the hotel to freshen up before dinner. Spend the night in the hotel in Accra.

Day 9:


After breakfast depart to Elmina castle. Built in 1482 by the Portuguese traders, Elmina castle was the first European slave-trading post in sub-Saharan Africa. Here you will have a guided tour, and you may make a special prayer inside the slave house. Have dinner and spend the night in a hotel on the Elmina coast.

Day 10:


Have breakfast and depart for Kakum national park. The park covers an area of 350km and includes Assin Attandanso resource reserve. Observe the moist evergreen rainforest with tall hard wood trees up to 65m in height. Enjoy the rich diversity of wildlife including: 40 species of mammals (such as: forest elephants, buffalo, leopard, bongo, red river hog, and monkeys) over 200 species of birds, large numbers of reptiles and amphibians and over 400 species of butterflies. Return to Accra for the night.
